Location and Size Ukraine is the largest country in Europe (excluding Russia), with a total area of about 603,700 sq. km. It stretches nearly 1,300 km from east to west and about 900 km from north to south. Borders and Seas Ukraine borders Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Belarus, and Russia. It is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov in the south. Capital and Cities The capital is Kyiv, one of the oldest cities in Europe. Other large cities include Kharkiv, Lviv, Dnipro, Odesa, and Zaporizhzhia. Landscape and Nature Ukraine is mostly flat steppe, with mountains in the Carpathians (west) and Crimean Mountains (south). The Dnipro River, one of the longest in Europe, flows through the country. Ukraine is known for its fertile black soil (chernozem). Climate Ukraine has a moderate continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. The south (Crimea and Odesa region) has a subtropical influence. People and Culture The official language is Ukrainian, though many people also understand Russian and English. Ukrainians are known for hospitality, folk traditions, and music. Ukraine is a multinational country – many nationalities live here. Economy and Resources Ukraine is often called the “breadbasket of Europe” because of its rich soil and agricultural production. It is rich in coal, iron ore, gas, and other resources. History and Independence Ukraine has a thousand–year history, starting with Kyivan Rus. It declared independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Tourism and Attractions Famous places include the Carpathian Mountains, Black Sea resorts, Kyiv’s Pechersk Lavra, Lviv’s old town, and Odesa’s seaside. Ukraine attracts visitors with beautiful nature, historic architecture, and cultural festivals.
