1. What geographical facts do you know about your country? Ukraine is the largest country in Europe, with a territory of 603,700 sq km. It stretches 1,300 km east to west and 900 km north to south. The highest mountain is Hoverla (2061 m), and the longest river is the Dnipro (2,200 km, 981 km within Ukraine).
2. What makes Ukraine the breadbasket of Europe? Ukraine is famous for its fertile black soil (chernozem), which is perfect for growing crops. Agriculture has always been one of the strongest sectors of the economy.
3. What helps support the development of the country’s resources and industry? Ukraine has rich mineral resources, many navigable rivers, and access to two seas. Its climate and land also support agriculture and energy development (oil, coal, gas, iron ore).
4. How does the geographical position of Ukraine help develop trade and culture? Ukraine lies in the centre of Europe, at the crossroads of many trade routes. The Black Sea and the Danube connect it with the rest of the world, which helps exchange goods, ideas, and traditions.
5. What gives Ukraine access to European countries? The Danube River, the Black Sea through the Mediterranean, and land borders with seven European countries give Ukraine wide access to Europe.
