1. What does New Zealand consist of? New Zealand consists of two large islands: North Island and South Island. 2. What is the biggest city in New Zealand? The biggest city is Auckland. 3. Where did the Maori come from? The Maori came from the Polynesian Islands. 4. What happened when the new settlers arrived? Many Maori died in battles over the land, and Maori children had to learn English, causing the old way of life to start disappearing. 5. When did the change start in New Zealand? The change started in the 1970s, when Maori and Pakeha began working together to build the country’s future. 6. What are the official languages of the country? The official languages are English and Maori. 7. What is nature like there? New Zealand has snow–capped mountains, green lowlands, beaches, lakes, waterfalls, geysers, and caves. 8. What interesting creature can be found in New Zealand? The kiwi, a flightless bird, and 35 species of dolphins and whales can be found there.
