Some amazing things which (1–c) were invented by accident!
Penicillin
When did you last have a sore throat? Did you get better because you (2–d) were given antibiotics? One of the first antibiotics was discovered (3–c) by Alexander Fleming when he got back from holiday. He was tidying up his lab when he saw something green in one of his dishes. He realized that this green stuff could kill the bacteria which causes some diseases. And Penicillin (4–a) was discoverred!
Sticky notes
Sticky notes are those brightly–coloured notes which (5–b) are used to remind us to do things. They (6–d) were invented by Dr Spencer Silver. He was trying to make a super strong glue to build airplanes but he (7–c) made a very weak glue instead. His friend Art Fry used little bits of paper to mark the pages in his book. He decided to use this weak glue so that the paper could stick. Yellow paper (8–a) was used for their first experiment, because that was the only colour available in their lab. That’s why a lot of sticky notes are now that colour.
Popsicles
Popsicle is the word Americans use for an ice lolly – a dessert which (9–d) is frozen on a stick. People believe that these (10–c) were created when 11–year–old Frank Epperson left his fizzy drink outside with the stick which he (11–b) used to stir it. The weather was cold and in the morning the drink was ice. He made up his mind to sell his popsicles and in 1924, his idea for the perfect frozen dessert (12–b) was shared with the world!
