Complete the dialogue with the phrases a–e.
Eric: I’m reading an autobiography by a police officer called Adam Holden who arrested a well–known criminal.
Rob: How exciting. Tell me more!
Eric: Well, (1) d. To my surprise, the author used to be a historian. I didn’t expect that. He changed his job after a thief stole some of his expensive jewellery.
Rob: What happened exactly?
Eric: The thief broke a window in the living room. Adam heard the noise and went into the living room. (2) a. Luckily, the thief didn’t hurt him. (3) b. Without thinking, the thief left with the jewellery.
Rob: Oh no! Eric: Yeah. Poor
Adam. (4) e. Unluckily, he called the police station and gave a description of the thief.
Rob: Did they catch him?
Eric: No, they didn’t, but (5) c. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that several years later, Adam caught a criminal, who was the same guy who’d stolen Adam’s jewellery!
Rob: No way!
