2. Portrait of Hanna Zakrevska by T. Shevchenko Taras Shevchenko, a famous Ukrainian poet, writer and artist, painted this portrait in 1843. In the painting we can see a young woman in a dark blue dress. The first thing that attracts our attention is Hanna's dark eyes. The artist used black and blue colours to depict them, and the woman's dress seems to match her eye colour. Her eyes look sad, as if she has a secret that cannot be told to anybody. Shevchenko masterfully depicted Hanna's face and shoulders, and the shadows on them. Her hair looks very realistic. At the same time there is something about this portrait that resembles icons. The colours in the portrait are harmonious and smooth. The background is subdued, painted with soft brush strokes, so nothing distracts the viewer from Hanna's face.
