E. Complete the story with the Past Simple or the Past Perfect Simple of the verbs in brackets.

Once upon a time there (1) lived a poor old woman and her son. Aladdin. The old woman (2) had lost her husband when the boy (3) was just a child, and she (4) worked hard to provide for him. Now that he (5) had grown into a young man. he (6) did his best to help her put food on the table.
One day, Aladdin's uncle, Mustafa. (7) came to visit them. He (8) wanted Aladdin to work for him. This was not the first time that Mustafa (9) had asked Aladdin to go with him. He (10) had offered him a job twice before, but because Aladdin's mother (11) was not very strong or healthy, Alladin (12) refused to go with him. This time, his mother (13) encouraged him to go. She (14) felt that this (15) was his chance to have a better life.
Aladdin (16) did not want to upset his mother, so he (17) agreed, even though he (18) had known that he was going far away from his mother. Aladdin (19) had never left his mother on her own before, so he (20) was very sad to leave. There was no way that he could know anything about the future.
