Hi Andie
In your last email you wrote about some science experiments you were doing at home. They sound like great fun! When I was a teacher, we did some interesting things in the science lab at school. If you (1–c) speak to your teacher, I’m sure you can carry out some of these together. But please DON’T try them at home – they can be dangerous!
My students loved making volcanoes. If your teacher agrees to this, you (2–b) will need to put some baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) into the bottom of a container. Next, you should mix salt with vinegar and then pour it onto the baking soda. Then, sit back and watch as the volcano erupts! If nothing (3–c) happens, you’ll have to add a little more liquid. And if you (4–a) ‘ve got some spare baking soda, you can try something else. Did you know if you (5–b) stir baking soda into vinegar in a jar, and wait for the foam to disappear, you get CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)? And if you (6–b) pour CO2 onto a fire, you put it out! Try it! You’ll need to light some candles. If you ask your teacher, they (7–c) ’ll decide the safest place to put them. Now pour the air from the jar onto the candles. If they (8–a) don’t go out at first, you’ll need to mix some more baking soda with vinegar.
