A. It was Sunday 11 August 2024 and the Paris Olympics (1) were ending. Unlike the very wet opening ceremony, it was (2) not raining. The crowd (3) was cheering as the athletes entered the stadium. It was a fantastic event for Ukraine. Their team was £ the smallest ever (only 142 sportspeople) but Ukraine ‘managed to win 12 medals – three of those gold! The whole country and its president (4) were celebrating their best result in 12 years.
B. Ukraine’s first gold medal came after the female fencing team beat South Korea. When Olha Kharlan scored the necessary points, everyone (5) was cheering. Yaroslava Mahuchikh got the second gold medal. She held the world record in high jump and so, many people (6) were expecting her to do well. Her first jump was good and amazingly, it was the highest jump of the finals. While the others (7) were trying to beat her jump, she lay down on a mat on the floor and got into a sleeping bag. And what (8) was she doing? She (9) was not sleeping, was she? Quite possibly so! Ukraine’s third gold was in boxing. When they announced that Oleksandr Khyzhniak was the winner, he fell to his knees and shouted. During the awards ceremony, he (10) was crying when the Ukrainian National Anthem started playing. What an amazing Olympic Games for Ukraine!
