Hi Jim,
You will be understood in English in big cities, but Ukrainian is spoken most often. Many traditions are followed in Ukraine, and guests are usually welcomed warmly. Lviv is a city where history is felt everywhere. The Carpathians are visited by people who like nature. If you like cities, Lviv is a good choice. If you like mountains, the Carpathians will be recommended.
